john hagel -- chuck hagel, rather, doesn't have that. he doesn't have the support, obviously, of his former fellow republican colleagues and tepid support, i think, from many democrats who are trying to do what they think is right for the president, but were very shocked and not very happy about his performance at that hearing. >> we're waiting and watching and seeing if this confirmation will be held up and how long. dana bash on capitol hill. thanks, dana. >>> reading a teleprompter on live television isn't always all that easy. i know, i do i every single day. and we also get thirsty from time to time. i get thirsty all the time as well. so here's a question, why are people on social media sites saying stuff, making such a fuss about marco rubio's now-famous grab for a bottle of water. excuse me. i'm getting a little thirsty here. >> oh, wolf! >> you know, sometimes you get thirsty. >> i know. >> we'll take a closer look at marco rubio. he is a rising, rising star in the republican party -- excuse me. mm. >> going to break. suddenly,

but that's far from the case for the president's nominee chuck hagel. joining us now is our chief political analyst gloria borger. carl levin said there will be a vote in the committee tomorrow. is this train leaving the station? >> yeah, i think the train is leaving the station. he wants to have a vote quickly. you have senator lindsey graham, republican, saying that he's going to put a hold on this nomination till he gets some more answers from the administration about the attack on the u.s. mission in benghazi. just listen to what the president's press secretary jay carney said about that, wolf. >> what is unfortunate here is the continuing attempt to politicize an issue, in this case, through the nominees who themselves had nothing to do with benghazi, and to do so in a way that only does harm to our national security interests. >> so what lindsey graham is trying to do is really stall the nomination and, in talking to hag hagel's supporters today and even to some republicans in the senate, they believe that hagel, in the end, will have the 60 votes

>> reporter: cnn has learned that chuck hagel's confirmation to be the next defense secretary appears to be all but certain. the reason we can report that is by some excellent digging by our producers. what they have found out is they have found at least five republican senators who have said that they would oppose any filibuster to block hagel's nomination. so mathematically what that would mean is even if there would be a filibuster, which is still an if, he would likely have the votes to overcome that and would go on to become the next defense secretary. they talked to a lot of senators, a lot of senators' offices and they came up with five. only two of them are actually going to support hagel's nomination, but the other three, richard burr, john mccain, and todd coburn have all told us they would oppose a filibuster if it came to that. we don't know when the vote will happen. first he has to go through committee. that will likely happen later this week. the senate vote will happen shortly after that. this is, again, some really enterprising reporting from our producers, ted stray
